Accra. December 19, 2023: The Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing at the African University College of Communications is thrilled to announce the shortlisting of fifteen talented authors for its upcoming regional anthology, “Afajato: Stories from around the Volta Lake.” This anticipated anthology, the Centre’s fifth publication in as many years, is scheduled for release and launch at the University’s Discovery House forecourt in Adabraka in March 2024.

In response to the Aidoo Centre’s call for submissions earlier this year, 144 entries poured in from writers eager to contribute to this literary exploration of the Volta Region and Togo. The editors and publishers, committed to fostering diverse voices and storytelling styles, welcomed a range of submissions, including humor, quality flash fiction, and stories with experimental narratives. English translations of original stories, particularly from regional writers, were also encouraged.

The authors who have secured a place in the anthology are:

  • Ruth Aryeh
  • Kwesi Woode
  • Cyril Benjamin Arthur
  • Alberta Mortty
  • Aisha Nelson
  • Serwa Gyedu Nuako
  • Deborah Titus-Glover
  • Kirsty Naa Adjeley Lomo
  • Patience Millennium Hlorlewu
  • Ursula Abanga
  • Kofi Dzorgbewu
  • Lawal Raqeeba
  • Ellen Diamond
  • Moses Apiah Abaah
  • Akorfa Dawson

These authors stood out among the diverse submissions, showcasing their literary prowess and unique perspectives on the cultural richness of the Volta Region and Togo.

The anthology follows the success of the Centre’s previous publications, including “Adabraka: Stories from the Centre of the World,” “Larabanga: Stories from the Savannah,” “Lockdown: true short stories inspired by COVID-19 Confinement,” and “Untold Stories Vol. 1.” Each publication has contributed to the Centre’s mission of promoting critical reading, creative writing, and literacy among the youth in Ghana.

The official launch of “Afajato: Stories from around the Volta Lake” is scheduled to take place at the University’s Discovery House forecourt in Adabraka in March 2024.

The Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing, a not-for-profit literary resource, continues to honor the legacy of the legendary feminist author, Ama Ata Aidoo, and strives to be a catalyst for literary excellence in Ghana.
