Today Friday November 16, an exhibition of mixed media opens at the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing at AUCC, Adabraka. The 12 works by visual artist Henry Obimpeh dubbed ‘Ntama Kasa’ will show until November 30.
The works on display are collages of textile prints, colour photographs and artefacts presented in unusual combinations to provoke curiosity.
Notable among the pieces are “Many are called”, a collage of lotto papers on wax print, “The Immigrant”, photography and cloth, “Money Trap”, cash, photography and textile, and the controversial “In the Abundance of water”, a picture of a semi-nude girl in the midst of rich, textured materials.
The artist Henry Obimpeh, also a lecturer at the African University College of Communications (AUCC), is the first in a series of avant-garde visual communicators whose works will adorn the walls of the Aidoo Centre proper and AUCC campus generally in the coming months. Already scheduled are veteran Wiz Kudowor and Ivorian Gabriel Menton.
The Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing was established March 17, 2017 as a learning facility at the African University College of Communications in Adabraka, Accra in honour of the legendary writer. Under the auspices of the Office of the President at AUCC, the Aidoo Centre has since then created numerous opportunities for literary connection and exchange and stimulated cultural expression, primarily in the Accra city area.
Visitors to the Centre include Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo herself, novelists N. Maria Kwami and Ayesha Harruna Atta, musicians Gyed-Blay Ambolley and Zapp Mallet, and culture aficionados Panji Anoff and Koku Dotse.
